Sweet and Sour Meatballs

Meatballs are always a hit at a holiday party, especially these homemade Sweet & Sour Meatballs. But standing over the stove and browning meatballs in batches is time consuming. So speed things up and cook these meatballs all at once in the oven! The sweet and sour sauce is made using ingredients you most likely already have in your pantry. To make the sauce your own, add a dash of bourbon or a pinch of smoked paprika for a slight smoky flavour, or a dash of sriracha chili sauce for some heat. Don’t forget the toothpicks when you put them out!

Ingredients

Meatballs
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk or water
1/3 cup dry bread crumbs
¾ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
1 ½ pounds lean ground beef
Sweet and Sour Sauce
1 tablespoon butter
½ onion, finely chopped (about ½ small onion)
1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic (about 3 cloves)
salt
1 cup ketchup
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
dash hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
  2. In a large bowl whisk together egg, milk (or water), breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Add ground beef and knead with hands until well combined.
  3. Form mixture into 1-inch meatballs. Arrange on a baking sheet and bake for 10 to 15 minutes. Set aside.
  4. Meanwhile, melt butter in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Add onion, garlic, and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring often until onions have softened, about 10 minutes.
  5. Add remaining ingredients and simmer until thickened, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. Stir in cooked meatballs and simmer until pipping hot, about 3 to 5 minutes.

Sweet & Sour Meatball Tips:

  • I’ve used lean ground beef for the meatballs because if there is too much fat in the ground meat, the fat will melt in the oven and your small meatballs will shrink in size.
  • The sauce is very basic, so go ahead and experiment with flavours.  You can add crushed pineapple, hot sauce, chili sauce instead of ketchup, or curry powder for that little je ne sais quoi!
  • To make sure your meatballs are all the same size, use a tablespoon to measure the meat mixture into equal portions, then simply roll them into balls (great job for the kiddies!).
