Basic Tartar Sauce

Tartar sauce is a mayonnaise-based condiment traditionally served with fish and chips. If you have mayonnaise, onion, and pickles on hand, you have all the ingredients needed to make this tasty tartar sauce.  You can make it ahead of time or whip it up last-minute.  It’s a basic recipe that you can add to – so try experimenting. If you need more, it can be doubled.

Basic Tartar Sauce


½ cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons minced dill pickle
1 tablespoon minced green onion
1 teaspoon minced capers (optional)
1 teaspoon dill pickle juice


  1. Mix together mayonnaise, dill pickle, green onion, capers and pickle juice.

Basic Tartar Sauce Additions:

  • Capers add a tart, sharp flavour, which cuts through the richness of fish and mayonnaise. Capers usually come packed in salt or pickled in vinegar. If you use capers packed in salt, make sure you rinse them well, or they’ll be way too salty. Personally, I prefer capers pickled in vinegar.
  • Pickle juice is a great addition to mayo-based dishes. It adds a little zip to a creamy coleslaw or a potato salad.
  • Tasty additions to this tartar sauce recipe: parsley, Dijon, tarragon, other types of pickles, lemon juice, and chopped egg.
